Is there a labelling requirement for leather?
In China, around 2 million dogs and cats are killed every year for their fur and skin and exported all over the world. Since there are no comprehensive controls in Europe regarding the type of animal used in leather goods, these products reach Germany undetected. In general, leather labeling does not require any information about the type of animal, the country of origin of the animal or information about the chemicals used in a leather product.
Seals such as “Made in Germany” also refer exclusively to the place where the leather is processed. A leather goods manufacturer from Germany that processes leather from Asia or India has the right to print “Made in Germany” on its labels.
